Bianca Shoemake (Hammer Throw – Athletics) and Nico Sciberras (Trap – Shooting) are the winners of the Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award for May.

Hammer thrower Bianca Shoemake, aged 16, has achieved direct qualification for the European Athletics U18 Championships, which will be held in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia, later in the summer after a fantastic performance at the Young Athletes Challenge Meeting, organised by Athletics Malta. Shoemake’s throw of 58.51 metres meant a national record in her age group.

Meanwhile, Nico Sciberras, aged 20, won the Silver medal in the Trap Men Junior Event at the European Championship Shotgun events which took place in Lonato del Garda, Italy. This was the first time ever that a Maltese Trap Junior Athlete managed to win a medal in a Continental Championship.

Robert Micallef, Chief Commercial Officer, presented the Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award. The Malta Sports Journalists Association was represented by General Secretary Lorraine Cunningham and Administrator Stephen Azzopardi.

This award is a joint initiative of the Malta Sports Journalists Association and Atlas Insurance. The adjudicating panel of this award takes note of all the youths’ national and international achievements of the month under review, and at the same time, it invites local sport associations and federations to send in their nominations for consideration if they feel that any of their under-21 athletes have distinguished themselves during that month. All the monthly winners are eligible for the annual award.

Nominations for this award may be sent via email to info@maltasportsjournalists.com. The rules and regulations of this award can be viewed through the link https://www.maltasportsjournalists.com/atlas-youth-athlete-of-the-month-rules-and-regulations/
