Esposito’s spirited performance not enough against Asian -48kg category Champion

by Sandro Micallef from Paris Maltese Judoka Katryna Esposito was eliminated by Baasankhuu Bavuudorj from Mongolia in the women’s under 48kg category at the Paris Olympic Games 2024. Esposito started off very well and came out on the Tatami with no fear. Her opponent Bavuudorj found it very difficult in the first two minutes of the match to keep up with the Maltese Judoka. After 47 seconds, the Mongolian athlete scored a Waza-ari – Kata-guruma and after a minute and a half she received a Shido. At the 35-second mark, Esposito also received a Shido for Grip avoidance, just like Bavuudorj. With 20 seconds left in the four-minute match, Judoka Baasankhuu Bavuudorj, the World Champion of 2024 and the Asian Champion, scored a Waza-ari – Undetermined nage-waza, securing her victory hence advancing to the final 16. Malta’s Men U16 Water Polo Team and Katrina Micallef take June’s Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award

Malta's Men U16 Water Polo Team and Katrina Micallef (Sailing) are the winners of the Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award for June. Malta's Men U16 Water Polo Team participated in the World Aquatics U-16 Championship, which was held in Malta between the 18th and 24th of June. This tournament featured young talents from around the globe and the Maltese youths showed dedication and determination to secure the 17th place in the World Championship. Playing in Group H, the Maltese youths started with overwhelmingly defeating Kazakhstan 16-6 but then lost against Romania 12-11 and Greece 8-4. In the classification matches, the Maltese team won against South Africa 16-9, Türkiye 8-4, and Israel 11-8. Meanwhile, Katrina Micallef, aged 16, won a historic bronze medal for Malta at the ILCA 4 World Championship, held in Portugal, between the 22nd and 30th of June. Johan Attard wins the third IZIBET Elite Athlete Award for 2024

National Lottery plc and the Malta Sports Journalists Association (MSJA) are pleased to announce that Johan Attard won the third IZIBET Elite Athlete Award for 2024, covering the months of May and June. Blackball player Johan Attard became the first Maltese cueist to win an IPA Tournament on Sunday 19th May. Together with Clint Grima he was one of two Maltese players to take part in the back-to-back IPA Tournaments in Coventry, England. Attard reached the final for both tournaments. Against professional player Clint l’Anson, the Maltese player looked set for a famous win when he surged just one frame away from victory when leading 9-7. But the English player showed all his class to win the final three frames and secure a thrilling 10-9 win. Attard didn’t give up and reached the final in the second tournament.
