Anthony Borg (Swimming) and Alex Degabriele (Tennis) are the winners of the Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award for July.
Anthony Borg, aged 17, accomplished an amazing feat themed Swim Round Gozo swimming 37 kilometres just under 12 hours. Anthony is the youngest swimmer ever to compete this long-distance swim.
Meanwhile, Alex Degabriele, aged 20, won the International Tennis Federation (ITF) 15K Doubles title on the Men’s Pro Circuit in Monastir, Tunisia teaming up with Youness Lalami Laaroussi from Morocco. Alex and Youness had a fantastic week of tennis overcoming many tough high ranked opponents and showing a huge resilience to eventually clinch this prestigious title. Alex was touring the ITF Pro Circuit during his season break from the North Carolina Wilmington University. in the USA.
The Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award was presented to Anthony Borg by Matthew von Brockdorff, Managing Director and CEO of Atlas Insurance, together with Robert Micallef, Chief Commercial Officer. The Malta Sports Journalists Association was represented by Administrator Stephen Azzopardi. Alex Degabriele’s presentation will be done later this year when he’ll be back in Malta.
This award is a joint initiative of the Malta Sports Journalists Association and Atlas Insurance. The adjudicating panel of this award takes note of all the youths’ national and international achievements of the month under review, and at the same time, it invites local sport associations and federations to send in their nominations for consideration if they feel that any of their under-21 athletes have distinguished themselves during that month. All the monthly winners are eligible for the annual award.
