Cherise Farrugia and Graham Pellegrini take February’s Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award

Cherise Farrugia (Horse Racing) and Graham Pellegrini (Track and Field Athlete) are the two winners of the Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award, following their respective successes during the month of February 2024.

As of this year, the Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award is being awarded to two young athletes for their national and international achievements, respectively.

Cherise Farrugia, aged 19, secured the 50th win of her career when she won the Class Bronze race with Hanouchka on Monday 26th February.

Cherise Farrugia started this sport at a very young age and used to attend  the Horse Racing Academy at the Marsa Racetrack..  Her first victory came on the 1st of November 2020 with the horse named Erromanga just a few weeks after she obtained her official licence.

Graham Pellegrini, also aged 19,  set a national record in the 400m while representing Malta at the Balkan Indoor Athletics Championships at the Atakoy Arena in Istanbul. Completing the one-lap sprint in a superb 47.55 seconds he edged out athletes from strong nations in the world of athletics, including Bulgaria, Ukraine and Moldova.

Cherise Farrugia and Graham Pellegrini were officially presented with the Atlas Youth Athlete of the Month Award and a sports apparel voucher by Matthew von Brockdorff, Managing Director and CEO of Atlas Insurance, and Robert Micallef, Chief Commercial Officer. The Malta Sports Journalists Association was represented during this presentation by General Secretary Lorraine Cunningham.

This award is a joint initiative of the Malta Sports Journalists Association and Atlas Insurance. The adjudicating panel of this award takes note of all the youths’ achievements of the month under review and at the same time it invites local sport associations and federations to send in their nominations for consideration if they feel that any of their under-21 athletes have distinguished themselves during that month. All the monthly winners are eligible for the annual award.

Cherise Farrugia (Tiġrijiet taż-Żwiemel) u Graham Pellegrini (Atletika) huma r-rebbieħa għax-xahar ta’ Frar 2024 tal-unur tal-Atlas Atleta Żagħżugħ/a tax-Xahar li min din is-sena qed ikollu żewġ rebbieħa kull xahar.

Cherise Farrugia, li għandha 19-il sena, irreġistrat il-ħamsin rebħa fil-karriera tagħha, nhar it-Tnejn 26 ta’ Frar fuq id-debba Hanouchka.

Cherise Farrugia bdiet dan l-isport ta’ età żgħira ħafna meta kienet tattendi  l-akkademja tat-tiġrijiet fil-korsa tal-Marsa. L-ewwel rebħa tagħha waslet fl-1 ta’ Novembru 2020 permezz ta’ Erromanga ftit xhur biss wara li ġiet liċenzjata uffiċjalment

Graham Pellegrini li wkoll għandu 19-il sena, kiser ir-rekord nazzjonali fuq l-400m waqt li kien qed jirrappreżenta lil Malta fil-Kampjonati tal-Atletika Indoor tal-Balkani f’Istanbul, fejn ikklassifika quddiem atleti minn nazzjonijiet stabbiliti fl-atletika, fosthom il-Bulgarija, l-Ukrajna u l-Moldova.

It-trofew tal-Atlas Atleta Żagħżugħ/a tax-Xahar għal Frar 2024 flimkien mal-voucher t’abbiljament sportiv abbinat ma' dan il-premju ġew ippreżentati lil Cherise Farrugia u Graham Pellegrini minn Matthew von Brockdorff, Direttur Maniġerjali u CEO, flimkien ma’ Robert Micallef, Chief Commercial Officer ta’ Atlas Insurance. F’isem l-Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sports kien hemm preżenti s-Segretarju Ġenerali Lorraine Cunningham.

Dan il-premju ta' kull xahar jingħata b'inizjattiva konġunta bejn l-Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sports flimkien ma' Atlas Insurance. Il-panel li jiġġudika r-rebbieħa ta' dan il-premju jieħu nota tas-suċċessi miksuba matul dak ix-xahar u fl-istess ħin jistieden lill-assoċjazzjonijiet u federazzjonijiet sportivi sabiex jibagħtu n-nomini tagħhom. In-nominazzjonijiet iridu jkunu għal atleti ta' taħt il-21 sena.
